With its iconic Mediterranean pine looming atop the cliffs, “La Terrazza” is the villa that defines Sorrento’s coastal harbor, crowning Sorrento´s famed coastline overlooking the Bay of Naples. The layers of terraces grand and small reflect the villa’s namesake, offering both spacious and secluded perches overlooking the Bay. Built and owned by the Royal Gunderrode Family since 1896, the villa is still privately owned and operated by Andrea Azzariti Fumaroli, fifth generation of the Royal Gunderrode Family of Frankfurt, Germany.

The villa, built on ancient Roman walls, is an historical landmark, and its construction marks an important period in the nineteenth century. It was built by the great German Baron Maximilian Von Gunderrode and was originally named “Villa Nardi.” At the end of the 1800s, while sailing the Mediterranean, the baron arrived in Naples and fell in love with the coastline, ultimately choosing this site to build his summer residence. In 1896, the villa was re-named “La Terrazza.” The great Florentine builder, Romanelli, reconstructed the entire villa, making it larger and one floor higher. Fashioning it in the Italian Liberty-style, he incorporated stuccoes, images of angels, flowers, fruits, marble columns and staircases. Over the years the villa was coined “the house of love” for its hospitality and spellbinding charm.

Just a three-minute walk to Sorrento’s Piazza Tasso, and directly above the main port to Capri, Ischia, and Naples, the grounds of the villa offer both unparalled tranquility and a front row seat to the best that the Amalfi Coast region can offer.

“La Terrazza” offers five private luxury apartments, each decorated in a Mediterranean-style with soft pastels, original paintings and antique furniture. Marble mosaics, dating back to the 1800s, are inlaid across the floors. Each apartment has access to the private terrace, with swimming pool, adorned with sofas and marble benches. Cleaning service, with linens and towels, is included. Private parking on the property is also provided. Room service, car rentals, tours, boat and day excursions, and many other offerings are available to guests to augment their experience at the villa.

The villa is centrally located in the heart of Sorrento, and is steps away from Piazza Tasso (the main square of Sorrento), shops and cafes. The Circumvesuviana train station, with direct access to Pompei, Ercolano and Naples, is a five-minute walk from the villa.

“La Terrazza” is available for rent year round. The terrace is also available for private events and wedding parties. Catering, bar services, music, tents and amenities are available upon request.

A fifth generation member of the Gunderrode Family, Andrea Azzariti continue to keep the family tradition as proprietor of La Terrazza. Raised in Sorrento on the La Terrazza property, Andrea brings a lifetime of experience and lore to La Terrazza. In his capacity as the proprietor of La Terrazza, Andrea is driven to perfect every detail of his guests’ experiences. As prior guests to villa can attest, Andrea goes about this task with characteristic humor and distincitive Italian charm. Those looking for an exclusive Amalfi coast experience often lean on Andrea’s lifetime of living on the Amalfi coast to discover hidden grottoes, Roman pools, land-locked beaches, or the best places to cliff-dive.

Whether it is uncovering rare grottoes and Roman caves on the Sorrento coast, or staying overnight off the coast of Capri and Positano, the true Amalfi coast journey is at its best when done by boat. Choosing from a diverse fleet of boats, guests can augment their stay at the villa with overnighters off the coast of Capri, Positano, or any of the other rare ports of this region. Those looking for that exclusive Amalfi coast experience can use proprietor Andrea Azzariti’s lifetime living on the Amalfi coast to discover hidden grottoes, Roman pools, land-locked beaches, or the best places to cliff-dive.

The boats maintained by the villa cater to every type of experience on the water. Guests can reach the famed cliffs of Capri in less than 20 minutes, and the Amalfi coast in less than half an hour. For those relaxing days spent sunbathing, rather crowd onto public beaches, we can bring around the villa’s classic Italian Gozzo boat in just 10 minutes to dock at anywhere off the coast. Some guests prefer to dock right below the villa; others prefer to range far and wide to the regions famed islands and the Amalfi coast; still others enjoy the early morning water-skiing made possible by the unique formation of the Sorrento coastline. The villa’s boats are retained for exactly that reason – to allow our guests complete and total freedom to access this beautiful region exactly as they wish.

Every inch of the famed terrace is clad in hand painted Amalfi tile, spanning an astounding 500 square meters (5,400 square feet). A communal gathering space for guests, the terrace offers a panoramic view of Capri and Ischia islands, as Vesuvius dominates the foreground. A private swimming pool is surrounded by palm trees and poplars, and bougainvillea overflows the historic marble planters. A staircase carved by hand into the cliffs leads from the terrace and offers guests a breathtaking private beach access to the Marina Piccola.
